Good luck teams!
The 2011 Floyd Kalberg Season End Tournament will be remembered like the rest of the 2011 season. The weather screwed up the best laid plans. All the first round games were delayed on Saturday morning by storms with torrential rains. Games times fell behind schedule by nearly two hours and some games moved to Sunday morning.
None of this detered the Itasca Footwear team that emerged from pool play into the brackets to win the tournament. This was a team with a .500 record for the regular season that came alive for the tournament.
They defeated a good Poquet Auto team 10-4. They went out to an early lead and held it throughout. They ended the game on a tag/forceout double play to win the title on a beautiful day at Lions Park.
The story of the 2011 season for the GVGS Senior Divsion might have been Mother Nature as a full one third of the schedule was cancelled due to weather. Most teams were able to play between 12 and 14 games instead of the originally scheduled 18.
Lupient Infinti made the most of the games available to play by compiling an impressive 13-1 record for the season. This won the regular season championship for them. Congratulations!
They were followed in the standings by the NW Optimists at 11-2, Golden Valley McDonald's at 10-2 and a tie for fourth with Almsted's Fresh Market at 10-3 and Doolittles at 9-2-2.
Despite the shortened season there were many good competitive games and a lot of fun had by all.
Almsted's Fresh Market defeated a solid NW Optimist squad 12 to 7 to win the GVGS Mid-Season Tournament Championship. The Optimists jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning but Almsted's answered back.
Almsted's held a slim 7-6 lead going into the 6th inning but broke the game open scoring five runs in the bottom of the sixth. A combination of walks, singles and a couple big blasts propelled the rally.
The Optimists had the bases loaded in the top of the 7th but could only muster one more run. A short pop up was the final out and the celebration was on for Almsted's.
Both teams had a fine tournament playing well throughout. This was the first time pool play was used in a GVGS tournament and most feedback was positive.
